RE: MID WEST WORK CAMPING

the corps of engineers have many facilities in the mid-west......
pick a state you like and go to state parks web pages, then google rv parks in the areas you like or want, some of the bigger ones will list employment, smaller ones usually have a e-mail contact.....and just shoot them an e-mail and ask if they use work campers............but....don't really think RRM has many permits to manage campgrounds in the mid-west...

RE: For Employers - Workamper Package

to all owners, managers and work campers:
Learn to read your future employer/employee during a phone interview.
Try to talk with both if they are a couple.
Everyone is "a little" different, be prepared to be flexible, don't have hard set expectations.
Look for others strong points.......not their weaknesses. Sometimes couple teams balance out.
Work Campers are generally only looking for holding their own financially.
Pay attention or get to know the needs of those you work with.
Do your fair share of building a team that enjoys working and associating with each other.
Be Fair.
Again, the above list is for all.......Owners, Managers and Work Campers. There will still be challenges but if these goals are in your mind..........especially the be flexible one.....those challenges are solved easily, and many time because your work mates chip in and help with hands on or ideas.....
You end up with happy campers all the way around......
Customers like to come to a place that has a team running it, work campers like to work where they are part of a team, managers/owners like to know they can count on their teams.
Happy Trails

RE: La Hacienda RV Resort And Cabins Austin,Tx.Stay Away.

someone might have dropped them a hint about your post.....hope posting here helped......if there is unfairness going on, it is one tool we work campers have .......... in this industry, and the minimal wages that are paid, the very least we can expect is on time pay when owed!!!!!!
hope it doesn't happen to you again......

RE: What's a Fair Stipend?

a stipend is usually intended to keep you from loosing money while working/volunteering......not like food which you would be buying for yourself anyway.....but unusual costs associated with the position. costs of water (you said no hookups)....a couple trips to town a week.....to buy groceries, services, P.O. and personal communications......those things that let you stay there....so it is good if you know your costs and needs....
usally these are best if you are working directly for the FS.....I've seen ads from a permit holder offering volunteer positions with stipend.....the deal is the permit holder makes a living from the job....so offering a stipend might be a way they keep more of the profits from their permit, instead of paying the hosts.....just something to keep in the back of your mind....
enjoy

RE: Do Workampers get to choose their site?

In many of the Forest Service parks, the host sites are designated as they have extras.....sometimes hookups in some form and as stated before dispersed for good coverage, plus you kinda end up taking care of the area where you are sited. Sometimes you have a small outbuilding to store tools and such. A private campground with prime spots is naturally gonna save the prime (high demand) spots for the paying customers. But, with the FS parks we are still living where others only get to visit....and if you choose a private park that is a destination park, the same goes for it...........we had an offer one time from a park in Haines alaska, where people off-loaded from the ferry..........and hit the road in a day or so........they had designated spots aaaaaand they asked the host to move sites every 2 weeks.....so the grass didn't yellow was what we were told....seemed like a pain, and there were other things that were fishy.....
this is where building a reputation (good) and staying with a park for a while might get you into prime spots......and as always never hurts to ask up front.....

RE: Workcamping and the economy

Up here along the Oregon coast this fall, more volunteers have dropped by to ask about paying positions.....
and the remarks are that they can't afford to volunteer and host/workcamp with prices going up and many investments going down.....
I wonder more what kinda effect it will have on the strong workcamping volunteer force......many state parks depend on them....they might have to increase some of the stipends they offer to keep staffing at a level that doesn't overload and chase off those who tuff it out.....
I always caution potential hosts about not being able to increase your wealth workcamping, you have to know that you will hold your own and just not loose savings...........so some may need to shift to paid positions to slow the errosion of savings......may have an effect just not the one you might initially think of.....

Fleetwood Slideout Leak

Our Ftwd is a 2000. We have 3 slides, no awnings except for the make-shift one over the bedroom slide. Leaks only show up after it's been raining for an extended period. Water is visible at one bottom corner of each slide. On one side of the 5'er (living room and bedroom) the leak is on the front end, on the other side (kitchen) it is on the back end of the slide. I cannot figure out how the water is getting in. We are fulltimers and are workamping most of the year so taking it in for troubleshooting is not an option right now. Anyone got any tips or things to look at?

RE: Workamping at the beach

RE: Workamping at the beach

Dry beach and wet beach are the main differences.
We are at the oregon beach.......so a wet beach.....when we pull in we wash/clean everything and treat steps, hitch, bumper and any other exposed metal that will rust with CorrosionX. When it storms we know there is salt in the rain so we rinse off the truck especially in the wheel wells. My dodge isn't showing any effect of the coast and this is our second winter here. If you notice rust coming off a screw replace it, the stain will spread. I guess just be observant if rust starts stop it.
A couple was in here a couple years ago, who had water leaks on their rig in places that they didn't notice......it messed up their rig pretty bad......so look at your roof often and also look at your marker lights and make sure they aren't allowing water in. The rubber they use as a water seal will age and crack in sunlight and leak. Even fog has water and you may get wet at night and it be gone by the time you get up in the morning.

RE: Looking for Summer job(s) in Alaska

you might combine that with hosting a state park so your camping doesn't cost anything either.............between the two it could be a good solution..
we are headed that way this summer also......heading north in late may coming back in early sept........no working this trip.....just sightseeing, fishing and maybe even panning a little here and there..oh and we had family just move up to wasilla this fall, so we will say hi too........but not too long.......last time was 1998....looking forward to it..........another item off our when we retire list......
good luck

RE: For Employers - Workamper Package

many state parks, out west anyway, use volunteers to maintain their parks....go to state parks web pages and they generally have a volunteer section....and all types of tasks too, corps of engineers use allot of volunteers also, the COE doen't use volunteers so much for hosting, but for projects/PR/assistance kinda things...........
wildlife refuges, fish and game, tons of opportunities...
http://www.volunteer.gov/Gov/index.cfm, is a good link to the federal stuff..........
then after you find something you like ask more questions here, usually someone on this forum has been there and can fill in your blanks.....

RE: Gate keeping. Where do we apply..

or the other obvious.......they close campgrounds (state and federal) in the winter in various states, but still allow day use access....so you park your rig in a campground that is closed to camping and open the gate at ?AM and insure park is empty and close the gate at ?PM, and keep an eye on things.......sometimes they give a stipend sometimes they pay and sometimes you just get your FHU site for free.
Those seem like good gig's.........
